Director, Governor Morehead School
Barbria Bacon has been with the Governor Morehead School since 2007. Her past experience includes Director of Education Services at the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind where she operated the Blind, Deaf and Multi-Handicapped Schools, Career Technology Education and Post-Secondary Programs. She also served as a Principal, Assistant Principal, and Team Leader at the Maryland School for the Blind. Mrs. Bacon is a graduate of Morgan State University, where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Education/Special Education and Johns Hopkins University where she completed her Master of Science degree in Administration and Supervision. Principal, GMS Pre-K - 12
Kelly Davis has been with the Governor Morehead Preschool since 1987. She served as the educational diagnostician from 1987 until 1991. In November of 1991, she assumed the director's role within the preschool. She is a graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill.
GMS Student Life Director
Laura Wooten has been serving Governor Morehead School students since 1993. She served as the school social worker from 1993-2006. She worked in the Office of Education Services as Director of Student Development from 2007-2010 wherein her position served The Governor Morehead School, Eastern North Carolina School for the Deaf and North Carolina School for the Deaf. Laura returned to the Governor Morehead School as Student Life Director in January, 2011. She received her BS degree from Mount Olive College in 1991.
Dr. Jerry Jailall
Education Consultant for the Education Services for the Deaf and Blind, NCDPI
Dr. Jerry Jailall is the Education Consultant for the Education Services for the Deaf in Blind at the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI), and has been based at the Governor Morehead School since 2014.
He has served in education for 25+ years at the elementary-, middle-, high-, and university levels in Guyana, the Bahamas, the USA and the United Arab Emirates. He has taught at the undergraduate and graduate levels in 3 universities – The University of Mount Olive, the University of Guyana and the Abu Dhabi University. His past positions at NCDPI include serving for 11 years as the State Coordinator for the GOALS 2000 School Improvement Program and the Comprehensive School Reform program, and working in the Title 1 Section.
Dr. Jailall holds several degrees and certifications, has written chapters in books and journal articles, and is Co-author of a Corwin Press bestseller, The Principal as Curriculum Leader: Shaping What is Taught and Tested.
His work with the ESDB schools include curriculum leadership issues, state and federal program compliances, school improvement plans, strategic plans, technology plans, school reform/school change issues, professional development plans, and program evaluation and monitoring.
Dr. Sarah McManus
Digital Learning Director for the Education Services for the Deaf and Blind, NCDPI
Dr. Sarah McManus provides leadership to the Governor Morehead School as well as the Eastern North Carolina School for the Deaf and North Carolina School for the Deaf in the areas of curriculum, instruction, assessment, professional development, and technology to support learning in the digital age. Her past positions have been Director of Instructional Content, Director of Learning Systems, Section Chief of Testing Policy and Operations, and Testing Consultant at the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. She has taught at North Carolina State University, Wake Technical Community College, and in Wake and Guilford county high schools. Dr. McManus is a three time graduate of North Carolina State University where she earned her Doctorate of Philosophy in Mathematics Education with a Concentration in Statistics, Masters of Science in Mathematics Education with a Concentration in Mathematics, and Bachelor of Science in Mathematics with a Concentration in Computer Science.
Darius McLaurin has been with the Governor Morehead School since August 2014. He served as the Administrative Services Manager in the Department of Public Safety from 2009 - 2014. He is a graduate of Johnson C. Smith University. His responsibilities includes running the day-to-day operations of Administration/Business office. He also oversees the budget, accounts payable, procurement, custodial, foodservice and Information Technology sections.
