The Garden Club of North Carolina assumed the project of developing a fragrance garden on the school campus. The major purpose of the garden is to provide a fully accessible garden which appeals to the sense of smell, touch and sound. The garden is named after Martha Franck, who envisioned such a garden designed for the blind after hearing Helen Keller speak in Raleigh, North Carolina. In 1999, the Garden Club appointed a standing committee to work with The Governor Morehead School to carry out the project. Construction began in 2000 and continues as additional sections of the garden are completed. |
