Independent Living

In this part of the Individualized Transition Plan (ITP), the team discusses what skills the student needs to learn to live independently after graduation.  This includes such things as food preparation, shopping, meal planning, managing budget, doing laundry, cleaning, personal grooming and hygiene, and organization.

It is also important to look at what type of living arrangements would best meet the needs of the students, as well as the parents.  This may mean for some students a supported living situation would be appropriate.  Depending upon the specific option agreed upon, it can sometimes be a lengthy process involving up to a year or longer.  This is why it is important to start making plans early and gathering information, so that decisions can be made and paperwork completed in a timely manner.

Shared Services

In order to prepare students for living independently after graduation, an Independent Living Center and Independent Living Apartment Program are available which follows the Student Life Curriculum.  These are shared services where staff from Instructional Services and Student Life teaches independent living skills.

Independent Living Center

The Independent Living Center offers instruction to students in the areas of Clothing, Food, and Room Management as well as Personal/Hygiene Care.  Students participate in the Center daily and are taught various skills.

Independent Living Apartment Program

The Independent Living Apartment Program assists students in making a smooth transition from a supervised cottage environment to a group home environment.  This is a privileged program, which offers opportunities in which students can apply critical thinking skills in managing their daily lives to prepare for independent living.

The mission is to proJune 4, 2008the best of their ability, necessary for an independent and productive life after graduation.
