Fine Arts
The GMS Arts Education program has served its students nobly since 1860. Over the years, the program has offered students the opportunity to explore and develop their artistic talents through the arts of dance, music, theatre arts, and visual arts. The results of the instructional opportunities and activities offered by our program have allowed many of our students to move on and become active and productive individuals in their communities.

Individualized lessons are offered to all students in elementary, middle and high school grades. Instruction consists of a 30 minute lesson each week that is arranged between the student and teacher. Elementary instrumental music instruction focuses on recorder, guitar, and piano. Middle and high school instrumental music instruction is open to all instruments. Lessons on a percussion instrument require previous musical experience on other band or string instruments.

Classes in music technology focus on the electronic instruments and equipment used in producing and re-producing music. Students are required to do projects involving individual and group composition, internet research, and a final project that is performed during the spring concert. The composition projects require students to use computer software programs, MIDI keyboard, and studio recording equipment to produce their final products.

Theatre study at GMS exposes students to the profession of acting through in-depth and hands-on training in vocal projection, acting skills, and theatre arts occupations. Under the guidance of an instructor, our students take responsibility for all aspects of performances, including lighting, sound, costumes, props/stage design, and other backstage management needs. Yearly productions include two musicals/plays and participation in the winter and fall concerts. The auditorium serves as the theatre classroom, providing students with a realistic environment in which to blossom as actors.

The Visual Arts program focuses on hands-on experiences involving painting, sculpture, illustrations, fabric design, and woodworking. Examples of student work are displayed yearly around the school, with one or two school art shows held each year. Examples of students’ works have also been displayed at local community exhibits and contests, as well as national exhibits and contests. Most notable of these contests has been the Helen Keller International Art Show.
