Residential Life Services

Residential Life Services consist of programs and accommodations for GMS students, ages 5 through 21, in cottages and in the Independent Living Apartment Program.

Cottages:  Each cottage has a student day room where students develop independent living and social skills, complete homework and enjoy leisure activities such as watching television, playing games or talking to friends. The cottages are equipped with telephones, computers, toys for younger students, and a lounge atmosphere for the older students.  The bedrooms are suite style with each student having a personal closet, desk, and dresser.  All cottages are well supervised with a structured environment and program.

Independent Living Apartment Program:  The Independent Living Apartment Program can accommodate eight students who are selected by a committee after they have met the criteria and assessment. Once students are selected, they apply critical thinking skills in managing their daily lives to prepare for independent living in the community.  Students plan their meals, complete their own cooking tasks, and shop for food.  They also learn about budgeting money and paying bills.  They are responsible for cleaning and doing their own laundry.  The students enjoy social and recreational activities, which they help plan.  A complete Independent Living Apartment Program has been designed and is coordinated by Instructional Services and Student Life staff.

Whether students reside in cottages or in the Independent Living Apartment Program, qualified staff works with all students.   Their goals are to foster study hours for an appropriate academic environment, offer recreation/leisure skills, train all students on independent living skills such as personal/hygiene care, clothing, food, and room management, and develop social skills in all students.
