Director, Governor Morehead School
Barbria Bacon joined the Governor Morehead School for the Blind in 2007, where she currently holds dual positions as School Director for the Governor Morehead School for the Blind and as Superintendent of Education Services for the Deaf and the Blind. In her role as Superintendent, Mrs. Bacon is responsible for three Residential Schools for the Deaf and/or Blind in the State of North Carolina.
As School Director, one of the many responsibilities Mrs. Bacon has enjoyed, has been expanding the leadership of schools and resources by embracing partnerships with the community and consumer groups including the Governor Morehead School Alumni Association, Council of the Blind, Foundation of the Blind, Association for the Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired, Lions Clubs International, National Federation of the Blind and the Association of Workers for Blind.
Mrs. Bacon has thirty plus years of working with students who have hearing or vision impairments. She garnered her wealth of knowledge and experience while working at the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind (SCSDB), where she was the Director of Education Services, operating the Blind, Deaf and Multi-handicapped Schools, Career Technology Education and Post-Secondary Programs. Prior to working in South Carolina, Mrs. Bacon was employed at the Maryland School for the Blind, serving as a team leader, assistant principal, and principal.
Mrs. Bacon is a graduate of Morgan State University, where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Education/Special Education. She then attended Johns Hopkins University and completed her Master of Science degree in Administration and Supervision. She also attended the Pennsylvania School of Optometry.
