Letter of Notice Concerning COVID-19

Dear Students, Staff, and Families,
This letter is to inform you that on March 14, 2020, Governor Roy Cooper directed K-12 public schools across the state closed for at least two weeks. This includes the Eastern North Carolina School for the Deaf,The Governor Morehead School for the Blind and the North Carolina School for the Deaf. This will begin on Monday, March 16, 2020, until Friday, March 27, 2020.

This action is in response to an effort to control the spread of COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. Our primary goal is to follow the guidance from the Governor, the State Board of Education, the Department of Public Instruction and the Department of Health and Human Services. Collectively, as we work to minimize the impact of this pandemic; we realize that the decision to close schools presents various hardships for many of our students, staff, and families. Safety for all must remain the ultimate objective.

The Eastern North Carolina School for the Deaf, The Governor Morehead School for the Blind, and The North Carolina School for the Deaf plan to reopen on Monday, March 30, 2020, and will resume Sunday transportation schedules. We will continue to update you if there are changes.

We believe that every student, each day, deserves relevant and engaging learning opportunities. While we cannot replace the value of the teacher-student interaction in the classroom, we are working to provide supplemental resources and activities that will help students remain engaged in learning while schools are closed.

We understand that employees will have many questions regarding how this unprecedented situation could impact work and leave as well as calendars, compensation, and benefits. Answers to some of these questions could depend on decisions made at higher levels of government and could even require changes in state rules and policies. For this reason, it may take some time to get clarity around solutions for these challenges.

Please know that we are doing everything we can to identify solutions and will provide you with additional information as soon as it is available. Please continue to monitor your email for information and updates. We appreciate your support, cooperation, and patience during this time. Please continue to be healthy and safe as we all face this significant health challenge.

Sincerely,

Barbria Bacon
