Please enjoy Governor Morehead's March Newsletter:

Dear Governor Morehead School Community,

GMS Welcomes Students Back to Campus on Sunday, March 21.  Day students can register March 22 at the Health Center between 8-10 am. Families should consider now whether their child’s academic plan will be based on “in person” or “remote” learning.  We understand this is a big decision and we support our families and students in whatever decision is made. It is important to recognize that many things have changed to minimize exposure and increase safety. Students, families, and staff must adhere to these strict new protocols and procedures for the success of our return to school. We are thankful for everyone’s willingness and flexibility as we adapt to these new circumstances and excitedly welcome back students to campus.

In-Person and Remote Teaching and Learning:

All classrooms are equipped with a smart TV and web cameras.  Teachers use Microsoft Teams, the TV, and the web cameras to include students who are still learning remotely.  The teacher will have a camera in the classroom and work will continue to be emailed, uploaded to canvas, and/or mailed home.

Remote Learning Changes:

There will be adjustments made to all students’ “Remote Learning” schedules. These changes are to allow for the success of both In-person and Remote learners. Remote learning will now begin at 9:10 am and finish at 3:45 pm.  Classes will be an hour and fifteen minutes, and four classes a day are required except for Friday which is a half day. There will be a 55-minute break for lunch daily. Remote learning will occur at the same time as In-person learning from 9:10 am-3:45 pm.

Registration Day:

Registration day will take place on Sunday, March 21, 2021 for residential students. This will be a drive through registration to minimize contact and exposure. Families will be contacted to schedule a time to arrive on campus to check their child in.  All medications and student belongings will be retrieved from vehicles and delivered by staff to the student’s cottage. If a family member must go with their child into the cottage, only one family member is permitted. Day students must register at the Health Center on March 22 between 8:00-10:00 am.

Changing Education Plan:

Families can change the child’s mode of learning if their child is remote or in-person based on the changing conditions of the pandemic and roll out of the vaccine.  If a student is going to change from remote to in-person, GMS Principal, Matthew Mescall, must be notified on the Wednesday of the week by 4 pm, before the change can be made.  Parents will be required to bring their child to campus on their “first day back to campus” once changed from remote to in-person.  The same notification should be made if changing from in-person to remote. This provides proper time to make additional accommodations to maximize safety in all program areas.

While we miss seeing all our community members and visitors, GMS is limiting nonessential visitors and activities involving external groups or organizations. All visitors must report directly to the check-in location and be screened for COVID symptoms.  Check-in locations include Lineberry front office, the Health Center, and Administration Building.  All staff, students, and visitors must practice social distancing, wear face coverings/masks, practice standard cleaning and hygiene, monitor for symptoms, and report confirmed cases of COVID. As we have stated at the beginning of the pandemic, we are all in this together.

Summer Program Plan:

Our summer program for students currently enrolled at GMS will begin June 14-June 18 which will be our Academic Studies Week.  The first week of June 14- June 18 will focus on areas of need for our students as it related to content areas, IEP goals, Expanded Core Curriculum activities, or completing incomplete course work from the 2020-2021 school year in fun and engaging. GMS students  interested in joining us this week (June 14-18), can sign up using the link below, contacting their case managers, or calling the school: https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=YZyehLvwg026X0tTN2ZM9_UbVpOzV1ZAhaPEzxKndL5UOEs3TjU5Q0JIRUlTWUxNTEVFTEM0NzEzRC4u

The remaining weeks will be our summer program and will be open to students who are visually impaired or blind across the state including GMS students June 21-July2.  Applications for the summer program on the dates of June 21-July 2 are attached to this newsletter and can be submitted to Mrs. Muldrow ([email protected]).

As we celebrate the safe return of our students, we are thankful for the constant support we received from our community members and families, the resiliency and determination of our students and staff, and the leadership of our staff and administrative teams.  GMS’s strength comes from the amazing talents and dedication of our staff, the hard work of our students, and the love and support from our community and families.  We are hopeful as more staff and community members receive their COVID-19 vaccines, that we will soon return to normalcy in our lives and events as the GMS community. We wish you all continued health. Students, we will see many of you March 22!
