REGISTER TODAY FOR THE GMS ACCESSIBLE STEM EXPO (ASE) ON APRIL 16, 2025!

Raleigh, NC – The Governor Morehead School for the Blind (GMS) is thrilled to announce the Accessible STEM Expo (GMS ASE) on April 16, 2025, from 9:00 AM – 1:30 PM. This exciting event is designed for K-12 students who are blind or have low vision, offering them a unique opportunity to engage in hands-on STEM activities alongside IT professionals, scientists, accessibility experts, teachers, college students, and fellow K-12 learners.

At the GMS ASE, students will explore an array of STEM topics, including how to communicate with future civilizations, hear how charts and graphs sound, and even code a robot! This immersive experience aims to make science, technology, engineering, and mathematics more accessible, inclusive, and engaging for all attendees.

Engaging Sessions Led by Expert Presenters

Presenters from esteemed organizations, including the Museum of Life and Science, the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, ABLR, the UNC Chapel Hill School of Information and Library Science, Edward Jones, GMS, and more, will conduct interactive sessions in the following categories:

  • Technology and Accessible Tools (Braille, Tactile Graphics, 3-D Printing, etc.)
  • Exploring Charts, Maps, and Data Through Sound (how does a bar graph sound different from a multi-line plot, etc.)
  • Hands-on Science (bugs, genetics, NASA, etc.)
  • Coding and Robotics (Coda-a-Pillar, Dash, Mouse-to-Go, Cubelets, Lego EV3, etc.)
  • Games and Recreation (audio games, audio descriptions, text-based games, etc.)
  • World of Work and Future Planning (financial future, accessible work environment, career readiness, etc.)

Registration Information

Attendance at the GMS ASE is completely free; however, registration is required. To ensure personalized learning experiences and interactive engagement with presenters, students will be assigned to 6-7 stations based on their interests as indicated on their completed registration forms.

Lunch will be provided for all registered participants.

Registration Deadline: Friday, March 7, 2025.
