Campus Closure for Winter Storm Fern

ATTENTION! As of 1/24, GMS campus will be closed on Monday, 1/26. As we continue to monitor the storm, information will be updated here. Please be sure to check back for any updates. Thank you - GMS Administration.

UPDATE 1/26: Campus will remain closed on Tuesday 1/27. Any further closures are still TBD.

UPDATE 1/27: Due to continued treacherous conditions on the GMS campus and the continued refreezing of secondary roads in the area and at GMS, the GMS campus will remain closed tomorrow, January 28th except for essential staff, i.e. maintenance and security.  K-12 Teachers will continue to provide virtual instruction to your students for the remainder of this week through Friday.  Students will not be coming to campus this week.  I will be monitoring the conditions of the roads in the area and the campus and will let other staff, i.e. housekeeping, food service, etc. know if they need to come in.  My main concern is for the safety of our staff and students.  I do not want anyone to risk their well-being by trying to come to work on icy roads.  If the roads clear, I may allow staff to come in who are not able to work virtually or who prefer to come in.  Those employees who can work virtually, please continue to do so. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.  It appears that another winter storm is headed our way this weekend,  so prepare for round 2.  Please watch the GMS website for updates.

- Dr. Kathy Segers, Superintendent

UPDATE 2/1: Due to hazardous road conditions across the state, the busses will not be picking up our students to come to campus on Sunday, Feb. 1, 2026. GMS students will not have class on Monday, Feb. 2, 2026.   There will not be virtual instruction on Monday, Feb.2,2026. Nurses and residential staff should not report to work on Sunday, Feb1, 2026.  The snow does not seem to be as bad in Raleigh so Wake Co and The adult programs have not made decisions about school closings at this time. I will be surveying the campus tomorrow and Monday to determine if the campus is safe for students and staff and will send updated information about critical employees working on Monday.  Food service, residential staff, maintenance, and campus safety should anticipate the possibility of working on Monday if needed. Those employees who can work virtually on Monday should unless we need you to come it.  My main objective is the safety of our staff and students. Watch the GMS website for updates.  Hopefully, we will be able to get back to normal sometime this week.

UPDATE 2/2:

Dear GMS Family:

Out of an abundance of caution, the decision has been made not to bring our students in on Tuesday, February 3, 2026. Hopefully, we will be able to pick them up on Wednesday, Feb. 4th, if it is safe. With that said, teachers will not need to come in on Feb. 3rd.  Residential and nursing staff will need to be on stand-by to come back on in Feb. 3, 2026, if we bring the students back in at the time that they would normally come in on Sundays. Our maintenance staff has done a fantastic job of clearing the snow off our roadways, parking lots, and sidewalks today. WYWLA students and staff will be able to return on Feb. 3rd if Wake County opens schools. The staff in the adult programs may also return on Feb. 3rd and decide if they feel that their clients should return. All other staff may return to school on February 3rd if they feel it is safe to do so. Please do not risk life and limb to come in,especially if you can work from home. All staff members who can safely come in tomorrow, I would appreciate it if you would come in, since we have been working from home for a long period of time. For those people who do come in on Feb. 3rd, please avoid any icy areas that still exist on the campus due to refreezing in the morning. If you feel more comfortable coming in on a 2-hour delay, then do so. Hopefully, Old Man Winter will give us a break and not bring us anymore of this weather for a while. I look forward to getting past this and getting back to normal.

UPDATE 2/3:

Dear GMS Family:

Due to the forecast of more inclement weather on Wednesday, the decision has been made not to bring our students back on campus until Sunday February 8, 2026. Hopefully, this weather will end, and we can have school as usual next week. With that said, all employees need to plan to report to work next week on their usual schedules.
