Happy New Year GMS Families,
Since the beginning of our school year in August, we have been busy beginning the process of re-defining what our prioritized areas of focus would be for the next several years. We have completed our strategic plan (posted on our website, under Academic tab). This strategic plan charts a course for us to support and uplift academic expectations, revitalize our student life programming, expand the diverse opportunities of our students, increase family/stakeholder engagement, and integrate Expanded CORE curriculum programming with our core focus of teaching and learning.
We have already begun the process for several of these goals. We are holding bi-monthly Town Hall Meetings with parents and external stakeholders to help them learn about the expanded programming and opportunities their children have as being a part of the Governor Morehead School family. Students are NOW able to experience physical education and integrated related services at the Pullen Park Aquatics Center. Students can now experience different club options after school to support and enhance their creative interests during student life hours. There are also clubs available for students to learn skills and support practice of those skills regarding self-advocacy and resolving peer to peer conflict. Students are also able to access enhanced, explicit instruction regarding safe, effective travel on and off-campus regardless of their visual impairment challenges. Students are competing in Model UN and Braille competitions with good success.
These are just a few things that are occurring, but we realize there is so much more to be accomplished. On January 25, 2023, at 6:30pm, we will be conducting another Town Hall meeting to discuss newer instructional focuses for all Governor Morehead School students as well as opportunities for students to receive more support during the summer for other agencies that work with the visually impaired community of learners.

We thank you for the privilege of serving your child and serving the visually impaired community.
