GMS Parent Community Committee

Mission/Purpose of Parent Community Committee (PCC)

The GMS Parent Community Committee (PCC) was formed to replace the old PTA. Contributions to the PCC are tax-deductible, as the PCC operates as a program under the Governor Morehead Foundation, a 501 C(3) organization.

The PCC Mission is to:

· Promote the welfare and education of children and youth eligible to attend the GMS in the home, school, and community.

· Support the school in improving education in ways that will adhere to administrative policy mission, goals, and beliefs of GMS.

· Raise funds for programs, materials, supplies, and equipment to further the education of children and youth.

· Bring about a closer relationship between the home, school, and wider statewide community that parents, teachers, and wider community supporters may work cooperatively in the education of children and youth.

· Foster communication, cooperation, support, information, and education within the GMS, including staff, students, parents, and the general community.

· Be a statewide resource and bridging the gap with parents and PSUs (Public School Units) across the state.

In short, the PCC will work to engage students and families through the development of activities, events and sharing of resources at the school level and statewide community level. Examples might include seasonal student parties, trips to community events and outings, student seminars on cooking, visits to Pullen Park and its Aquatic Center, purchasing and packaging items for charitable causes and more. Some of these activities will include the participation of visually impaired students who attend school outside of GMS, at the invitation of the PCC. It is hoped that the inclusion of students outside of GMS will foster strong relationships between GMS and the many state education systems that also educate students with vision impairment.
